Injectable Facial Fillers
Facial filler injections are used to enhance
the volume of a certain region, such as the lips, or soften
deep facial grooves, wrinkles, or folds to provide a more
balanced and attractive facial appearance.
The most common areas where filler injections
are used include the lips, the nasolabial folds (the fold
from the side of the nostril to the corner of the mouth),
the marionette lines (from the corner of the mouth to the
chin), the tear trough lines (under the eyes) and the frown
lines between the eyes. Several other areas can also be improved
with fillers, depending on the patient's needs. Other facial
areas may be better addressed with Botox,
and other skin rejuvenation methods. Therefore, for an optimal
result, Dr. Samaha recommends a conservative and selective
approach, tailored to the patient's needs. This may include
the use of Botox alone in specific areas, skin fillers alone,
or a combination of both. A discussion at the time of consultation
will help Dr. Samaha and the patient decide together on the
best approach.
There are a variety of filler substances available.
Each has distinct characteristics and advantages in the treatment
of certain facial regions. Some are permanent while others
are temporary. Dr. Samaha favours the temporary fillers because
of their natural feel and appearance as well as their safety
record. Fillers used by Dr. Samaha are based on a substance
naturally made by the body called Hyaluronic acid, which retains
water to give the skin its volume and tone. Whereas some fillers
require skin testing prior to use, to exclude allergic reactions,
none of the fillers used by Dr. Samaha require a skin test,
because they are substances normally produced by the body.
Side effects with injections of hyaluronic acid-based fillers
are uncommon.
The injections take a few minutes depending
on the number of areas being treated. If necessary, the area
is numbed with local anesthetic to minimize discomfort prior
to injecting the filler. The filler needs to be placed with
precision to achieve the best results. Therefore, detailed
knowledge of the anatomy and an appreciation of facial esthetics
are essential for a successful result. Dr Samaha's expertise
and exclusive focus on facial surgery provides him with the
knowledge of the anatomy of the different facial regions and
the experience in treating this area.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does it last?
The longevity of filler substances depends on the particular
substance used, the area being enhanced and the patient's
skin characteristics. In an area where motion is frequent,
such as the lips, the result will last a little less than
in a non-mobile area such as the tear trough. Although some
patients have had results last up to a year, generally, they
last from 6 to 8 months.
What is the recovery?
Dr. Samaha performs filler injections as an office visit.
Patients may carry on their daily activities after their visit.
There may be some mild swelling and bruising after the injection
for 24-48 hours.
